Some of the problems in writing a « Global History of Modern Christianity »

Of the many problems that one has to resolve if one wants to conceive and write a global history of modern Christianity, I want to discuss three.First : One should attempt to determine the right point in time when the story of a global history of modern Christianity actually begins. Does this story begin with the age of discovery, that is with Columbus, or later, for example with the French Revolution, or even later, for example with the Edinburgh conference of 1910 when leading representatives of Western missionary organizations proclaimed that they would be able to convert the people on all continents to Christianity within one generation ? In addition, one should discuss whether world Christianity was a uniform, homogeneous body at all at any given point in time or, rather, always to some degree multifaceted and polycentric so that a different approach is necessary.Second : One should try to identify long-term trends that shape this history, and discuss their effect in a global perspective. In my view, two factors deserve special attention : the pluralization of Christian communities in the modern era and, equally important, secularization.Third : One should define the historical context for a global history of modern Christianity that is to discuss what historians call « proper contextualization ». One should ask what influenced Christianity in the modern era more : the global history of violence and warfare, the impact of industrialization, urbanization and consumerism, or the dramatic story of imperialism.Il faut tout d’abord déterminer et discuter les limites chronologiques du commencement du christianisme moderne global, dans tous les continents du monde. Est-ce que le monde moderne global commence avec l’Âge de la Réformation, soit avec Martin Luther et Jean Calvin, ou plus tard, peut-être en 1750, ou 1789 ? Chaque décision chronologique résulte d’une conception différente du christianisme moderne.On doit en second lieu identifier les forces qui ont affecté le cours du christianisme moderne et discuter les conséquences dans une perspective globale. Je propose deux directions de recherche : Premièrement les effets de la multiplication des congrégations et des communautés chrétiennes ; deuxièmement les relations entre les forces de sécularisation et les forces des régénérations religieuses.On doit enfin prêter attention aux influences étrangères dans l‘histoire du christianisme moderne. Par exemple l’influence des guerres et de la violence, ou l‘influence de l‘industrialisation, de l‘urbanisation, et de la surconsommation, ou l‘influence de l‘impérialisme et du colonialisme, ou enfin la relation entre les directions différentes du christianisme et les autres religions dans le monde moderne.Pour le moment, on peut observer beaucoup de questions et peu de réponses
