Testing the factor structure of PANAS-X and the relationship between affect and assumptive worlds

Teorija o unipolarnoj strukturi afekta govori nam kako su pozitivan (PA) i negativan (NA) afekt neovisni jedan o drugome te da je struktura afekta po svojoj prirodi unipolarna (Watson, 1985; prema Watson, 2000). Unatoč očekivanjima autora teorije još uvijek nema jednoznačnih rezultata o ortogonalnosti PA i NA. Ovo istraživanje je još jedno u nizu onih koji provjeravaju postavke te teorije, kao i njenu relevantnost kroz ispitivanje odnosa s drugim varijablama. Cilj ovog istraživanja je provjera faktorske strukture upitnika PANAS-X, razlika u strukturi afekta muških i ženskih sudionika te odnosa između afekata i svjetonazora. 215 studenata mostarskog Sveučilišta ispunilo je skale PANAS-X, te skalu WAS, mjeru benevolentnosti svijeta (BS), smislenosti svijeta (SS) i pozitivne samopercepcije (PS). Dobiveni rezultati potvrđuju robusnost faktora PA i NA. Nije utvrđeno postojanje razlike u strukturi afekta kod muških i ženskih sudionika. Rezultati također ukazuju na nisku pozitivnu povezanost između PA i BS te PA i PS.The theory of unipolar structure of affect suggests that positive (PA) and negative affect (NA) are independent of one another and that the structure of affect is unipolar by its nature (Watson, 1985; in Watson, 2000). Despite authors’ expectations, there are still no single-valued results on independence of PA and NA. This research is one of the many researches which are verifying this theory, as well as it’s relevance through examination of relationship with other variables. This research has a goal to examine the structure of questionnaire PANAS-X, the difference in structure of affects for male and female participants and the possible correlation between affects and assumptive worlds. A sample of 215 students completed the PANAS-X and WAS, a measure of benevolence of the world (BS), meaningfulness of the world (SS) and worthiness of self (PS). The results have shown strong stability of PA and NA factors. No difference has been found between male and female participants in structure of affect. Also, the results have shown low positive correlation between PA and BS and between PA and PS
