ERRORS IN THE RECOUNT WRITING OF THE EIGHTH GRADERS OF SMP NEGERI 1 KARANGPLOSO MALANG

In learning English, the students usually find difficulty in writing tasks. Commonly, they are afraid of making mistakes and worry about their ability in reproducing and arranging words and sentences. The writer was interested in conducting the research on the errors in the recount writing of the eighth graders of SMP Negeri 1 Karangploso Malang because of two reasons. First, they often make errors in assignment given that have correlation with structure although the teacher had been given the explanation before give the assignment. Second, they are not re-checking their assignment.\ud This study used descriptive research design because there is no administration, or control of treatment. The population of this research were 254 students and the sample were 51 (20% from the population). The sample was taken by simple random sampling. The research instrument of study was students’ writing task. To analyze the data the writer took some steps, namely identifying, classifying and tabulating of errors.\ud The result of the test showed that there were 367 errors from 51 compositions in the recount writing. There were 130 or 35,42% errors of omission, 58 or 15,80% errors of addition, 152 or 41,42% errors of misformation and 27 or 7,36% errors of misordering. Based on this data, it can be said that, the most dominant error made by the eighth graders was misformation errors
