This essay focuses on Gadda’s readings dedicated to pre-Freudian psychology, particularly Ribot’s and Fechner’s studies. The main objective of this work is to re-appraise Gadda’s background in order to re-evaluate his theory of the prose, from the Meditazione until the end of the 1940s (the essay “Psicanalisi e letteratura” and the Pasticciaccio). The methodology followed is two-folded: from an analytical point of view, the essay will evaluate the psychological readings of Gadda; from the interpretative point of view, these readings will be evaluated in the light of Gadda’s theory of the prose.
