The aim of this thesis was to analyse the energy use in black tea production and suggest energy saving options by examining one of the tea factories in Burundi. It was found that 77% of factory’s energy requirements is used in the drying phase. An implantation of a heat recovery system on the exhaust air from the tea dryer can provide a reduction of approximately 33% of that energy used in the dryer compared to the current situation. Since this energy comes from firewood, the installed system will have a positive impact on the environment. Because it will reduce the consumption of wood in a country where the deforestation rate is high.
