In this article, youth mental health was examined on the basis of both self-assessed health among students and medical discourse in Läkartidningen in the 1970s and 2010s. Today's young people report more psychosomatic symptoms than 40 years ago. More girls are experiencing psychological and somatic symptoms now than in the 1970s. They also estimate their health worse today, while the change for boys is slightly less. The notion of an increase in psychosomatic symptoms and girls' vulnerability reappears in the Läkartidningen during both decades.
