There has been much debate in recent years regarding the adequacy of the American educational system in preparing our children for the real working world. After graduation, many students do not have the skills necessary for even entry-level positions. Many do not read or write well and cannot perform basic math functions. Many of them are considered to be functionally illiterate, even with a high school diploma. The total number of illiterate Americans is estimated at about twenty million. The majority of them have already passed through the school system or have emigrated to the United States. This means that the only chance this group will have for education is on the job.
