Climate change due to human activities has caused a global desire to lower CO2 emissions in the hope of halting the increasing global temperature. For electricity generation, this means reducing the CO2 emissions by increasing the fraction of renewable electricity generation. For example, using fuels derived from biomass instead of fossil fuels in steam boilers can reduce CO2 emissions. However, burning biomass fuels can be problematic, because the fuels tend to be comparatively rich in ash-forming elements and other trace elements.
