Hepatitis B is a disease caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV), and can be acute or chronic. Infection with hepatitis B virus is the leading cause of chronic hepatitis worldwide and people with chronic hepatitis B infection are at increased risk for developing liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma). In addition, the hepatitis B virus is the leading cause of cirrhosis. HBV can be classified into 8 genotypes A through H based on the divergence of 8% or more in the nucleotide sequences of complete genome.
