Uncertainty is critical to the tunnel design. In this study, a novel reliability-based design (RBD) method was developed by integrating the rock-support interaction and its uncertainties for rock tunnels. In this method, the rock-support interactions were analyzed based on a convergence-confinement method. Uncertainties were estimated by reliability analysis using Excel Solver. Chaotic particle swarm optimization (CPSO) was adopted to search the optimal tunnel design parameters based on the rock-support interaction analysis.
