The survey research reported in this article examines teaching, testing and assessment methods applied in senior high schools in Ho Chi Minh City. 38 teachers of English (Grade 10) from four schools participated in this survey. The results of the survey revealed that most of these teachers did not apply the Communicative Approach to language teaching recommended by the Ministry of Education and Training and the textbook (English 10) writers. Their teaching techniques are also in line with their testing techniques because their tests only included grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and reading items which cannot measure students’ communicative competence.
