There is a growing public interest in the differences in labour market behaviour and the treatment of women and men. Although women’s participation in the labour market is on the increase, gender segregation and wage differentials remain substantial. The aim of this thesis is to chart the evolution of gender differences in the unemployment rates of European countries over the past one or two decades, particularly during recession periods, which are defined by the temporary slowdown of economic activity, as well as drops in GDP and employment rates.
