BACKGROUND The endothelium plays a vital role in the regulation of blood flow and haemostasis as well as mediating the response to tissue injury and inflammation. Disruption to these pathways is a critical factor in the development of coronary heart disease (CHD) and clinical syndromes such as acute myocardial infarction (MI).
