The sedimentation test: an analysis in antenatal and gynaecological cases

1. The sedimentation speed is of no valve in the diagnosis of pregnancy before the third month. 2. The sedimentation speed increases each month after the third month, until the end of pregnancy. 3. The sedimentation speed is not increased in simple tumours, therefore it may be useful in the differential diagnosis between pregnancy and simple tumours after the fourth month, if all other factors causing acceleration of the sedimentation speed can be excluded. 4. The number of cases of abortion and miscarriage is too small to allow conclusions to be made as to the value of the sedimentation speed in these conditions. 5. The sedimentation speed in carcinoma may be normal, even though metastases have occurred. 6. The sedimentation speed in non-inflammatory gynaecological conditions is normal. 7. The value of the sedimentation speed in pelvic inflammation cannot be estimated from the small number of cases investigated, but the impression is that no more evidence can be obtained from the sedimentation speed than from the clinical examination
