Why was there no agricultural revolution in Bengal after the Permanent Settlement of 1793?, The Presidency is compared with the Forth Valley in Scotland where an. agricultural revolution was successful. The theoretical framework'for comparison is provided by the concept of the production function. The first chapter establishes a valid chronology for comparison by applying Boserup's theory that technological change in agriculture is explained by population pressure, besides exploring changes in the environment. The second chapter constructs labour inputs for the major subsistence and commercial crops.
