Deforestation modelling is a relatively new field of study. The importance of this science has been advanced with the emergence of deforestation as one of the leading causes of global climate change. The advent of REDD (reduced emissions from deforestation and degradation) and related policy mechanisms has accelerated the need for modelling deforestation. This project looks at developing a methodology for modelling deforestation using the Land Change Modeler software. To generate the model of change in forest cover, satellite images (years 1996 and 2001) were used to produce land cover maps which were then used with the software to estimate probabilities of pixels changing from forests to other land use types.
