Dialogue on Shaky Ground: Examining Perceptions of Success Criteria for Participation During the First Months of the Groninger ‘Dialoogtafel’.

This study examines stakeholder perceptions of a matching zone in the form of a Dialogue Table in Groningen, the Netherlands, based on the criteria: intention, initiation, inclusiveness, information, and influence. The main result of the research is the addition of intention as the fifth ‘i’ criterion, next to the four criteria presented by Sidaway (2005). Based on these criteria the first months of the Groninger Dialoogtafel (www.DialoogtafelGroningen.nl) have been examined, in order to elicit main narratives, show the plurality of views, and find bases for improved mutual understanding between participants and stakeholders. Although every process is unique, it is assumed that the inclusion of ‘intention’ as a basis for considerations about matching zones can be more widely applied, and that the narratives presented here can help appreciate the plurality of views in other processes as well. Regarding the case study the conclusion is that the possible ways for satisfying Sidaway’s (2005) criteria have been examined well, but that continued or increased commitment (intention) will be the pivotal determinant of long-term success
