Avian influenza viruses can cause devastating outbreaks in domesticated poultry, with rapid transmission of virus between birds and high mortality. Current measures for control of influenza involve surveillance, closure of live poultry markets and mass culling. However, despite implementing these measures, outbreaks continue.
