Sweetser (1990) claims that vision is the prime sense organ that motivates metaphors of intellect, such as ‘knowing’, ‘understanding’ and ‘thinking’. She also asserts that these metaphors are cross-cultural phenomena, possibly universal in human thoughts and speech.
