According to reports on The Expanding News Desert by Penelope Muse Abernathy (2020), between 2004 and the beginning of 2020, the United States lost 2,100, or over a quarter, of its newspapers. Between April 2020 and April 16, 2021, the news desert increased as over 60 newspapers across the country closed or merged due to the financial fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic and the continued competition of the internet. There is ample research showing the decline of local newspapers in the United States.
