Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Present data has reported the role of anthocyanin-rich food/extract in increasing fecal short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) concentrations and NK cells infiltration in the large intestine mucosa, thus contributing to prevent preneoplastic lesions formation. We have observed that anthocyanins/anthocyanidins might prevent colorectal tumorigenesis due to stimulation of cell cycle arrest and apoptosis mechanisms, besides downregulation of pro-inflammatory and metastasis invasive signaling mechanisms.
