The paper presents the cultural and linguistic history of place names referring to the (former) possession of a clergyman, or that of a religious order in Hungary in the Late Middle Ages (1351–1526). Relevant data have been collected from well-known Hungarian historical geographies, gazetteers and dictionaries. The author first gives a short overview of the roots of the political influence of the Church in the Kingdom of Hungary in the era. The paper then explores the distribution of the collected place names in time and space; the semantic references, the lexical, morphological and syntactic structures recognizable in the name forms; the structural changes that affected place names in the period, as well as the conventional and unconventio...
