To Evaluate the Maternal and Fetal Effect of Nifedipine in Threatened Preterm Labour

BACKGROUND: Preterm labour is defined as onset of regular painful frequent uterine contraction associated with progressive dilatation and effacement of cervix before 37 completed weeks of gestation from the last day of menstrual period. Preterm delivery is most important contributor of increase in perinatal morbidity and mortality. AIM AND OBJECTIVE: • To study the efficacy of nifedipine in prolonging the pregnancy in preterm labour. • To record the effect of nifedipine in mother and fetus. METHODS AND MATERIALS: It is a Prospective study.The study undertaken in 100 pregnant women admitted in Labour ward of government mohan kumaramangalam medical college hospital with preterm pains. They were divided into 50 patients in Nifedifine group and 50 patients in control group. The Data for the study collected as structured questionaries, coded and entered in Microsoft exel. The data was cleaned, checked for inconsistencies, missing values and prepared for Analysis, The results were tabulated and visualised in microsot word. RESULTS: The mean age of pretermlabour in both Nifedipine and control were 25.5yrs the range between18-35yrs the mean gestational age in Nifedifine group 30.2 week’s, in control group 31.2 weeks. But the range in both groups were 28 weeks to 34 weeks. In both groups risk factors are low socioeconomic group, primi, predisposing factors. The mean duration of prolongation of pregnancy in Nifedipine group is 5 days but range from2-15 days. APGAR >7 in Nifedipine group 80%, in control group 59.62%. Birth weight >2 kg in Nifedipine group 82%, in control group52%, development of RDS in Nifedipine group 2.86%, in control group 33.33%, there is significant difference in P value of APGAR, birth weight, development of RDS between Nifedipine and control group. CONCLUSION: This study concludes that if Nifedipine given to the patient with Preterm Labour prolong the duration of pregnancy, particularly it gives time to act steroids so there is significant reduction of development of RDS in Newborn babies. There is no significant increase in maternal or fetal morbidity, there is no increase in maternal or fetal mortality
