Fulbright Program, 1967-1968. Group description: The photograph collection in the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs Historical Collection (CU) is rich and extensive in scope. It documents the numerous programs administered by the Department of State, including the Fulbright Program. Photographs pertain primarily to the Cultural Presentations Program, foreign leaders, the International Visitor Program, U.S. Specialists, and Fulbright grantees (teachers, students, professors, and research scholars). Photographs of Fulbright Program participants and prominent officials comprise a large segment of the collection and highlight program activities in India, the United Kingdom, Japan, Austria, Latin America, and the former Soviet Union, as well as other countries. Part I consists of the core collection of photos and is treated as a separate entity within the organizational outline.The historical collection of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (CU), formerly the Division of Cultural Relations, documents the development of U.S. international educational and cultural exchange activities, including the Fulbright Program. Organized in 1961 within the Department of State, the bureau was responsible for administering the principal provisions of the Fulbright-Hays Act. It functioned as a part of the State Department until 1978 when it merged with the United States Information Agency. The bureau remains active to this date
