During the Cold War, oil played a huge role in fueling the US effort against the Russian expansion of communism. The Iranian Prime minister Mohammad Mossadeq wanted to nationalize Iranian oil, he was suspected by the US to attempt oil deals with the USSR and abandon the previous oil concessions with the West.
