Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common liver disease in western countries. Globally, NAFLD affects approximately 25% of the population. The term NAFLD includes both fatty liver disease (steatosis) and inflammation of the liver (NASH; non-alcoholic steatohepatitis). Fatty liver disease involves the accumulation of fat in the liver cells. If liver fattening persists, it can lead to liver inflammation. Liver inflammation occurs in about 30% of patients with fatty liver and can eventually lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer.
