A short note on the famous book of Kornelis Heiko Miskotte, also translated in English, When the gods are silent (original text 1956), a biblical and cultural study on the nihilism he perceived after WW II. What remains of his thesis that the Old Testament has an 'extra' vis-a-vis the New Testament, especially in the struggle with this upcoming nihilism? Partly as a result of this book the Old Testament has earned a more prominent place in the theological discourse in The Netherlands than in most other countries.
