This study explored the efficacy of a pilot wetland in improving the quality of the final effluent from PANPAPER mills that discharge into the Nzoia river that drains into Lake Victoria in Kenya. The system's operation, between 2002 and 2005 was dynamic involving different operation modes, hydraulic loading rates and retentions. The study reports for the first time reduction rates for BOD and phenols in a constructed wetland for pulp and paper mill wastewater and gives recommendations for design, set-up and maintenance of a full-scale facility
