Homogeneous vs. heterogeneous nucleation of silicalite zeolites prepd. from a clear soln. and an amorphous gel, resp., was studies using small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) and wide angle x-ray scattering (WAXS). SAXS method was used to match length scales of the appropriate aggregates and colloidal particles. To observe the onset of crystn. during precursor reactions WAXS method was used. The SAXS-WAXS expts. stress the strong similarity between precursors during both the heterogeneous and homogeneous prepn. of silicalite zeolite and can be considered to be in support of the hydrogel transformation mechanism.
