Static and dynamic structure in solid carbon(70)

This thesis is a report on structure in solid C$\sb{70}.$ We analyse the symmetries of solid C$\sb{60}$ and C$\sb{70}$ using new techniques developed in this thesis. A detailed but simpler than usual discussion of the derivation and study of space groups is also provided. A mean field theory for the high temperature phase transition in C$\sb{70}$ is developed. It explains the discontinuous nature of the transition, the orientational ordering of the molecules and the distortion of the lattice that accompanies the transition. We also extend the mean-field theory to include the dynamic behaviour of the orientation of the molecules close to the transition. The dynamical theory is valid only in the hydrodynamic limit, that is the long wavelength and low frequency limit. The free parameters of the theory are constrained by comparing its predictions to experimental results from differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), muon spin resonance and X-ray scattering. The predictions of the theory for inelastic neutron scattering and NMR experiments are also calculated
