This qualitative study carried out an extensive investigation into the role of the portfolio in a secondary English classroom in a suburban school district. Students kept a portfolio that documented their reflections and self-assessments on the quality of their work as well as the influence of the portfolio in shaping their growing understanding of writing. As both teacher and researcher, I sought to learn how the portfolio might be best employed. This year long study argues that a portfolio can be a powerful educational tool for students.
