Réexamen des monuments du Palais royal d’Ougarit inscrits en hiéroglyphes égyptiens conservés au Musée national de Damas

The corpus of documents inscribed with Egyptian hieroglyphics found in the royal palace of Ugarit, mainly consisting of vessel fragments in “Egyptian alabaster” or travertine, presents certain important characteristics which provide additional clarification on the relations between the Egyptian court and the Ugaritian court in the 2nd millennium BC. These vessels, some of which are unpublished, are re-examined according to different approaches: direct observation of pieces at the National Museum of Damascus has provided several details and rectifications concerning their preservation and their decoration; the inventory and excavation notebooks provide complementary data to those concerning their place of discovery; a historical and epigraphic study is thus an occasion to propose a reading of the engraved inscriptions and to refi ne the readings made in previous publications, and to advance certain hypotheses on the dates and the functions to be assigned to these different objects inscribed with Egyptian hieroglyphics from the royal palace of Ugarit. An inscribed vessel in travertine (the famous “marriage vessel” of Niqmaddu) is distinguished from the rest of these objects, which belong to a clearly Egyptian typology and always carry the name of the pharaoh; it is thus treated apart, as its interpretation continues to be a problem.Le corpus des documents inscrits en hiéroglyphes égyptiens trouvés dans le Palais royal d’Ougarit, essentiellement constitué de fragments de vases en « albâtre égyptien » ou travertin, présente certaines caractéristiques importantes qui livrent un éclairage supplémentaire sur les rapports entre cour égyptienne et cour ougaritaine au IIe millénaire avant notre ère. Ces vases, dont certains restaient inédits, sont réexaminés selon différentes approches : l’observation directe des pièces au Musée national de Damas a permis d’apporter plusieurs précisions ou rectifications concernant leur conservation et leur décor ; la reprise des carnets d’inventaire et de fouille a, quant à elle, complété les données connues sur leur lieu de découverte ; une étude épigraphique et historique est ensuite l’occasion de proposer une lecture des inscriptions gravées ou d’affiner les lectures données dans des publications antérieures, et d’avancer certaines hypothèses sur les dates et les fonctions à assigner à ces différents documents inscrits en hiéroglyphes égyptiens présents au Palais royal d’Ougarit. Un vase en travertin inscrit (il s’agit du célèbre « vase de mariage » de Niqmaddu) se distingue du reste de ce matériel, qui relève d’une typologie bien égyptienne et porte systématiquement un nom de pharaon : il est donc traité à part, dans la mesure où son interprétation continue à faire problème.Lagarce Bérénice.
