The indirect tradition of the Roman Antiquities is mainly represented by three great sources : the Constantinian Excerpts, the Suda and a summary of the work, of unknown origin and time, named Ambrosian Epitome. This threefold testimony, fundamental for the lost books (XII-XX) of the A. R., was however neglected for the first decade, the direct manuscript tradition of which has been well conserved. The aim of this article is to examine, from examples in books IV and VIII, each witness’s respective behaviour, in order to determine their relations with the ancient manuscripts of the direct tradition.
