Abstract –. The beard of the gods is not a trivial detail. The study of male pageantry in the imagery of archaic and classical times reveals many surprises, if only one is interested. Its presence, far from being reduced to the simple meaning of manlihood, brings a wealth of information that enhances the image of several reading levels. Even when it is absent, facial hair is loaded with a value that is very strong. By its design, its pictorial treatment, the image-makers invite us to a pogonology. The beard tells us about the mentality of the time, the psychology of the god of which it adorns the lower face and returns directly to the function of divinity or refers to its sphere of influence.Résumé–.
