The goal of this paper is to draw attention to some aspects of literary criticism about Dio Chrysostomus and Synesius Cyrenensis during the Byzantine era. Following Arethas of Caesarea, the former was reputed to have fetid breath, as allegedly had the tyrants of Sicily Gelo or Hieron. An other bit of gossip was probably born in Platonic circle, but was repeated later by Gregory of Nazianz, with apparently a confusion with another Dio, namely Plato’s friend and the uncle of Dionysius II ; it was distorted by Arethas in order to castigate one of Dio’s discourses, the Trojan, for Dio could be considered as having betrayed the Homeric truth. To be sure, Photius had read Dio’s and Synesius’works. The former got a very careful critical assessment...
