We tend to view beer consumed in Antiquity as an alcoholic beverage, in essence as something common and low-class, and certain Greek and Latin authors have contributed to the stigmatization of beer by labeling it the drink of Barbarians. But presenting beer solely in this unflattering light obscures the motives that could and still can prompt numerous peoples to include beer and related fermented beverages in their strategies for survival.
