The Roman public banquet (epulum) is widely attested in Ancient literature, but it is less apparent in the archeological record. This study thus is intended to illustrate the evolution of the Roman public banquet in the Western Roman Empire, especially in Italy, from the Republic to Late Antiquity on the basis of written sources ; and to identify the buildings that could have accommodated such banquets. The written sources (texts and inscriptions) mention public banquets held for various occasions : religious festivals, funerals, investment in public office, family gatherings. Whether religious, political, economic, or social, the public banquet played a vital role in Roman daily life. Yet the archeological record offers few examples of ven...
