The expression of gratitude from Proclus toward his master Syrianus becomes very impressive in the proems of the Commentary on the “ Parmenides” and in the “ Platonic Theology”. In these passages, especially elegant and noble (as an introduction to the study of gods), Proclus shows that he depends on Syrianus not only for the content, but also for the form of such proems. Nonetheless, the style of the two is quite different, insofar as the style of Syrianus is sober, functional and vivid in its polemical strength, whereas the style of Proclus is rhetorical, careful and not really conceived for strong polemics.
