Part I : the nature of the Perioikic settlements. A full examination of’ the evidence shows that, even if some were probably only komai (either of Sparta or of Perioikic cities), the greater part of those which we know had the status of cities. This is corroborated by the way in which the texts present these settlements when they take them as a whole. Part II : nature and limits of the dependency of the Perioikic cities. In the military sphere, they depend entirely upon Sparta, which does not prevent some of them from having, by the means of proxenoi, relations with cities in the rest of the Greek world.
