To explain the mudras or in other words the movements of the hands, the author analyzed more then 2836 Buddhist representations from four regions or sites of the North West of India like Swat (Butkara I and Saïdu Sharif), Kapisa (Shotorak), Gandhara, Hadda and their artefacts cut in schist or moulded in stucco and clay in order to study their rate and probability. He specifies his investigation in quoting chosen examples of these regions, the cradle of the mudras, some of them being codified have been transmitted to south East Asia such as Abhayamudrâ (lack of fear), Dhyannamudrâ (meditation) Dharmacakramudrâ (teaching and preaching) and Bhumisparsamudâ (taking the earth to witness).
