La fabrication historiographique d’un passé héroïque en Grèce classique : Ἀρχαῖα et παλαιά chez Hérodote

Abstract.– In the Enquiry of Herodotus, the terms ἀρχαῖα and παλαιά correspond more or less to what we would call, in our shared anthropological knowledge, the mythical past of the Greek cities ; sometimes a time which has bygone, but mainly a time with a strong relationship with the present of the production and of the performance of the historical discourse. When there is a semantic distinction in the use of both expressions this is not in introducing the point of view of the speaker, but in referring to the etymology of the word concerned ; ἀρχαῖος seems to refer to the time of the ἀρχή, to the time of the beginnings, to a primeval past. But this past is still active in the present, without solution of continuity. This remarkable continuity inserts this “ archaic” time of the heroes between the time of the gods and the time of the men, which includes the recent past and which is generally orientated towards the near future.Résumé.– Une analyse lexicale et sémantique conduite dans l’Enquête d’Hérodote montre que les παλαιά et les ἀρχαῖα correspondent plus ou moins à ce que, dans un savoir anthropologique désormais partagé, nous appellerions le «passé mythique » des cités hellènes. Ils désignent un passé parfois révolu, mais le plus souvent un passé mis en relation avec le présent de l’énonciation du discours historiographique. Si différence sémantique il y a entre ces deux termes, elle relève moins de l’introduction du point de vue du locuteur que de l’étymologie des termes concernés, ἀρχαῖος semblant renvoyer au temps de l’ ἀρχή, au temps des débuts, au temps primordial. Mais, fondateur, ce temps se révèle encore actif dans le présent, sans solution de continuité. Cette continuité inscrit ce temps «archaïque » des figures héroïques entre d’une part le «temps des dieux » , d’autre part le «temps des hommes » qui englobe le passé récent et un présent en général orienté vers le futur.Calame Claude.
