Abstract.– In the Enquiry of Herodotus, the terms ἀρχαῖα and παλαιά correspond more or less to what we would call, in our shared anthropological knowledge, the mythical past of the Greek cities ; sometimes a time which has bygone, but mainly a time with a strong relationship with the present of the production and of the performance of the historical discourse. When there is a semantic distinction in the use of both expressions this is not in introducing the point of view of the speaker, but in referring to the etymology of the word concerned ; ἀρχαῖος seems to refer to the time of the ἀρχή, to the time of the beginnings, to a primeval past.
