From peer effects to school choice : mechanisms underlying social segregation in schools

La ségrégation sociale à l’école peut être porteuse d’inégalités entre élèves, dans la mesure où la composition des établissements qu’ils fréquentent influe sur leurs trajectoires. Par anticipation de ces effets de pairs notamment, les familles effectuent des choix scolaires qui eux-mêmes risquent de contribuer à une ségrégation accrue. Cette thèse contribue à la compréhension des mécanismes en jeu, en quantifiant effets de pairs et stratégies d’évitement scolaire. Elle comporte trois chapitres. Premièrement, l'objectif est de mesurer les contributions respectives de la ségrégation résidentielle et de l'évitement scolaire à la ségrégation sociale au collège. Le deuxième chapitre, par une évaluation des effets hétérogènes de la composition des classes sur les notes au Baccalauréat, permet d’envisager les conséquences d’une plus grande mixité scolaire parmi les lycéens français. Enfin, le troisième chapitre analyse les déterminants des comportements d'évitement des familles suite à des changements de sectorisation, réactions qui peuvent modifier l'impact anticipé des politiques de mixité sociale à l'école.Social segregation at school can induce inequalities among students, insofar as the composition of the schools they attend influences their trajectories. In anticipation of these peer effects, families make school choices that may themselves contribute to further segregation. This thesis contributes to the understanding of the mechanisms at play, by quantifying peer effects and school circumvention strategies. It consists of three chapters. First, I aim to measure the respective contributions of residential segregation and school circumvention to social segregation in French middle schools. The second chapter, by evaluating the heterogeneous effects of class composition on Baccalauréat grades, makes it possible to consider the effects of a greater diversity among French high-school students. Finally, the third chapter analyses the determinants of school circumvention behaviors following changes in the school map, which may modify the anticipated impact of school diversity policies
