In France, about 400 000 new cancer cases are diagnosed each year. The fight against cancer is shown as a public health priority. The long-time latency and multi-factorial nature of these diseases make their etiology more difficult to understand, although high stakes exist as 40% of cancers could be prevented. The epidemiological surveillance of cancers is crucial, despite the fact that the current system of epidemiological surveillance, based on cancer registry set-up at a departmental level (except some national registries) seems to be incomplete as a result of partial coverage of the cancer registries.
