Today, the most commonly grown string bean cultivars are the upright ones, which are suitable for growing on larger areas and for processing. In the countries of the former Yugoslavia, such cultivars are mostly of foreign origin. The development of indoor vegetable production and organic production has resulted in an increased demand for the modern pole string bean varieties in Serbia. In the last few decades, the introduction of foreign varieties of pole string beans (Jerusalemski, Goldmarie, Blau Hilda, Meraviglia di Venezia) has been under way in the country as well.
