The basic goal of sunflower breeding at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops is the creation of standard hybrids with a high oil content and seed and oil yields and resistance to dominant diseases and drought. Beside that, confectionery hybrids for special food and feed purposes are also produced. In this respect, apart from breeding in order to improve the main seed yield components, special attention is given to an increase of protein content and quality, decrease of seed oil content, increase of 1,000-seed weight, and decrease of hull content.
