Rhizomania is caused by Beet necrotic yellow vein virus, which is transferred by the soil-borne fungus Polymyxa betae. Considering the yield reduction rhizomania is economically the most important sugar beet disease today. Reduction of root yield and sugar content can go up to 80%, if the susceptible genotypes are grown on the highly infected soil. In the paper are presented latest data about new virus pathotypes and new sources of resistance to virus and fungal vector.
