The term “social media” refers to websites or apps allowing users to create their own content to be shared by others on the platform (Moreno & Kota, 2013). Today over 72% of Americans use some form of social media, with the highest proportion of users ranging between ages 18-29. Research suggests that frequent social media use is correlated with high depressive symptoms, reports of low self-esteem, and appearance anxiety (Choukas-Bradley et al. 2019; Sherlock & Wagstaff 2019).
