Domestic violence against women: coping strategies

El propósito de la presente investigación es indagar acerca de las estrategias que utilizan las mujeres víctimas de violencia intrafamiliar para afrontar la violencia ejercida por su pareja. Se trata de un estudio de corte mixto y su metodología está basada en la aplicación de un cuestionario relacionado con la caracterización de las dinámicas familiares de 15 mujeres que han sido o son víctimas de violencia por parte de su pareja, residentes en la localidad de Suba, en la ciudad de Bogotá D. C., y de entrevistas semiestructuradas, con el objeto de profundizar sobre esta problemática. Se identificaron las estrategias de afrontamiento empleadas, las cuales se clasificaron como de tipo emocional y focalizadas en el problema. Los resultados evidenciaron que una misma víctima es capaz de emplear diversas estrategias a la vez. Se pretende conceptuar, en dichas personas, más que su condición de víctimas, la manera como emprenden estrategias que les permiten crear empoderamiento para enfrentar y superar la problemática que les aqueja.This work is aimed to carry out research on the strategies used by females who have been victims of domestic violence in order to cope with abusive behaviors from their partners. Mixed methods research were used in this study such as a questionnaire based on features of interpersonal relationships at familiar environment of fifteen abused women in the municipality of Suba, in Bogota, as well semi-structured interviews intended to extend studies about this subject. On other hand, the applied strategies used by victims were identified and classified such as emotional focused type which has been addressed on this issue. The obtained results have demonstrated that victims can implement several strategies simultaneously. To sum up it can be said females have found means that allow them not only to apply coping strategies but also overcome the situations related to mental and physical manipulation, these features present a significant perspective that has forwarded their role of victims
