Alloys based on the intermetallic compound NiAl are considered potential replacements for Ni and Co-based superalloys in high temperature structural applications due to their excellent oxidation resistance, low densities, high thermal conductivities, and increased melting points. Unfortunately, NiAl exhibits low tensile ductility at room temperature and low strengths at elevated temperatures which have combined to hinder its development.
