Incidence of industrial shrimp fisheries on macroinvertebrates in the Colombian Caribbean

Debido al desconocimiento de los efectos que causa la pesca de arrastre de camarón sobre los macroinvertebrados que captura, se determinaron la composición, abundancia y patrones espaciales de estas comunidades en el Caribe colombiano. Se evaluó la incidencia de la flota por medio de descriptores ecológicos comunitarios, el grado de perturbación usando curvas de abundancia y biomasa (ABC) y el efecto de la inclusión de dispositivos reductores de fauna acompañante sobre los macroinvertebrados. Se monitoreo durante un año la actividad de la flota pesquera de camarón, se identificaron, midieron y pesaron las especies capturadas y se realizaron experimentos incluyendo dispositivos excluidores de juveniles de peces y de tortugas. Se identificaron cuatro zonas en donde opera la flota; los crustáceos decápodos fueron el grupo dominante, los equinodermos mostraron baja riqueza y las especies biogénicas (corales y esponjas que son parte estructural de los fondos) baja abundancia. Sumado a esto, en las curvas ABC de todas las zonas la abundancia se encontró por encima de la biomasa y el estadístico W fue negativo, lo que confirma una alta perturbación y dominancia de especies pequeñas de estrategia de vida corta ¨oportunistas¨. El uso de dispositivos mostró resultados positivos en la reducción de macroinvertebrados que hacen parte de la fauna acompañante del camarón, lo cual es de gran importancia para la regulación de la actividad en pro de la preservación de la diversidad en el Caribe colombiano. Se recomienda que en todo estudio sobre la fauna acompañante de la pesca del camarón se incluyan los macroinvertebrados, aun cuando no tengan importancia comercial. / Abstract. Due to ignorance of the effects caused by shrimp trawling on macroinvertebrates captured, we determined the composition, abundance and spatial patterns of these communities in the Colombian Caribbean. The incidence of the fleet was evaluated through community environmental descriptors, the degree of disturbance using abundance and biomass curves (ABC) and the effect of the inclusion of bycatch reduction devices on macroinvertebrates. The shrimp fishing fleet was monitored during a year; were identified, measured and weighed the species caught and experiments were performed including juvenile fish and turtles excluder devices. We identified four areas where it operates the fleet, decapods crustaceans were the dominant group, the echinoderms showed low richness and biogenic species (corals and sponges that are structural part of the bottoms) showed low abundance. In addition, in all ABC curves fishing areas, abundance was found above the biomass and the W statistic was negative, confirming a high disturbance and dominance of small species of short life strategy “Opportunistic¨. The use of devices showed positive results in the reduction of macroinvertebrates that are part of the bycatch of shrimp, which is of great importance for the regulation of the activity for the preservation of diversity in the Colombian Caribbean. It is recommended that any study on the bycatch of shrimp fisheries include macroinvertebrates, even if they haven’t commercial importance.Maestrí
